Seamless.AI alternatives that bill for results, not searches
Seamless.AI charges a credit for each contact its Find step researches, whether or not the result is usable. Hunter, Apollo, Instantly and Lusha's platform do not charge when nothing is found. Sluice also refunds a bounced email exactly. UpLead offers monthly billing for teams wary of Seamless.AI's renewals.
The two complaints behind most switches
Seamless.AI is a real-time search engine for contacts: you search, its Find step researches each person, and you get emails and numbers. The reasons people look elsewhere are consistent across third-party reviews.
1. You pay for the research, not the result. Find uses 1 credit per contact. Seamless.AI's own education article says this plainly. If the research turns up an address that bounces, or nothing useful, the credit is still spent. There is a Credit Back Protection programme for emails its own checker flags, but it is discretionary. Real-world accuracy is reportedly 70 to 80% (third-party).
2. Cancellation and auto-renewal. This is the top complaint in reviews. Basic is reportedly around $147 per user a month, billed annually (we could not verify this from an official page), so an unwanted renewal is a large bill.
Both are about risk, not features. So instead of grouping alternatives by database size, this page groups them by who carries the risk when a lookup goes wrong.
Who pays for a miss, and who pays for a bounce?
| Tool | Lookup finds nothing | Email later bounces | Billing (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seamless.AI | Credit spent on the research | Discretionary credit back | Reportedly annual |
| Hunter | No credit used | Verify first at 0.5 credit | Monthly or annual |
| Apollo | Not charged without a valid email | Refund within 30 days | Annual or monthly |
| Instantly | No credit if no verified email | Not stated | Monthly |
| Lusha | Free in platform and CSV; API bills | Not stated | Monthly or annual |
| Sluice | Not billed | Refunded exactly, once | Monthly only |
As far as we can find, most vendors refund a bounced email in a limited way or not at all. That is why the right-hand column matters as much as the left.
If you want misses to be free
Hunter
- Suits: anyone who knows the company and wants the right person's verified email.
- Price: free with 50 credits a month; Starter $49 a month for 2,000 credits, or $34 a month annually; Growth $149 for 10,000 (as of October 2026). Hunter's pricing page says no credits are used if no email is found. Verification costs half a credit.
- Weakness: email only, and people search is thin compared with Seamless.AI's.
Apollo.io
- Suits: small teams who want a large database plus sequences and a dialer.
- Price: Basic $49 per seat a month billed annually with 30,000 credits a year; Professional $79; Organization $119 with 3 seats minimum (as of October 2026).
- Weakness: its waterfall charges per source that returns data, including unverified emails found on the way, and reported bounce rates are 15 to 35%. Our Apollo alternatives page goes further.
Lusha
- Suits: reps who look people up one at a time and want phones as well as emails.
- Price: free with 40 credits; Starter $49.90 a month for 400 credits; Pro $69.90 for 600. Email 1 credit, phone 5 (as of October 2026).
- Weakness: small allowances, and the API bills at least 1 credit per request even without a match. See Lusha alternatives.
If you want sending in the same place
Instantly
- Suits: cold email teams who want leads and sending under one roof.
- Price: lead credits from $47 a month for 1,500 credits from a 450M+ database. No credit when no verified email is found; 1 credit for its own data, 2 for partner data (as of October 2026).
- Weakness: filters and research are lighter than a dedicated database. It is strongest as a sender.
If you want out of annual commitments
UpLead
- Suits: small teams who want a searchable B2B database with verified emails and mobile numbers, month to month.
- Price: Essentials $99 a month for 170 credits, or $74 a month annually; Plus $199 a month for 400, or $149 annually (as of October 2026). UpLead states a 95% email accuracy rate.
- Weakness: expensive per credit at the entry tier (about 58 cents), and its pricing page does not say whether a bounced email is credited back.
Sluice
- Suits: founders, small teams and agencies who want to pay only for usable results and see the cost first.
- Price: Starter $9 a month, Working $39, Agency $149, monthly only, no seats, no annual contract (as of October 2026). See pricing.
- How it handles risk: every pass shows its worst-case price before it runs. A profile lookup that returns no title, no company and no location is not billed. Every address is independently verified, only verified addresses are billed, and a bounce is refunded exactly what it cost.
- Weakness: Sluice is new, with no public reviews. There is no dialer and mobile numbers are expensive. HubSpot is the only CRM integration. And it works best when you start from a source (a competitor's reviewers, people talking on Reddit, companies hiring) rather than a raw title search.
A worked example
Say you research 1,000 contacts and 25% of the emails turn out to be unusable, which sits inside the 70 to 80% accuracy range reviewers report.
- On a pay-per-research model, you pay for all 1,000 and get about 750 you can use. Each usable contact costs a third more than the list price.
- On a pay-per-verified-result model, you pay for the 750 that verified. Any of those that later bounce are refunded or credited, depending on the vendor's policy.
The headline credit price matters less than which of those two models you are on. Our article on what a lead actually costs runs the same arithmetic across a whole funnel.
Our recommendation
If you need phone numbers at volume, compare Lusha and UpLead. If you need emails and want misses free, start with Hunter. If you want to stop buying contacts by the thousand and start from people already showing a need, try Sluice's free directory previews or see how we compare with Apollo.
