Finding clients for an SEO agency

SEO agencies win clients from two groups: businesses paying Google for clicks they could earn organically, and local businesses whose listings are weak (few reviews, a slipping rating, no website). Sluice finds Google advertisers by keyword and place and local listings by trade and town, then scores and ranks each against your profile.

Two kinds of SEO client, two hunting grounds

Most SEO agencies sell to one of two buyers, and each leaves different traces.

The paid-search spender. An ecommerce shop, a law firm or a software company already buying clicks on Google. They have a marketing budget and someone who looks at cost per acquisition. Your pitch is that some of that spend could be earned instead.

The local business with a weak presence. A clinic, a garage, a solicitor's office whose map listing has few reviews, a falling rating, or no website at all. The owner decides. Your pitch is visibility in their town.

Knowing which one you are hunting changes the source, the profile and the message.

Where each buyer shows up

For the advertiser group, "People there" turns a company into a directory search for the person who decides, such as a head of marketing or founder. Previews are free; only people scoring 70 or more are revealed, at 5 cents each.

Signal phrases worth watching

Signals are phrases of at least three words. Sluice keeps a record for each: searches opened, people found, and how many cleared 70. Suggestions for an SEO agency:

  • "organic traffic dropped"
  • "lost rankings after update"
  • "Google Ads too expensive"
  • "need help with SEO"
  • "not showing on maps"

The second and fourth tend to surface agency owners and freelancers as well as buyers. Your profile should say who you do not sell to, so the scoring pushes peers below 70.

A worked first month on the Working plan

This is an example to show the maths, not a promise of results. Working costs $39 a month and carries 5,000 credits in the first month (a credit is one cent).

  • Week 1. Four Google advertiser searches: two keywords in two cities. The price of each run depends on the source and is shown before it runs. Say you cap them at 1,500 credits in total.
  • Week 2. For the 30 advertisers that look right, use "People there" to find the marketing lead. Previews are free; say 25 clear 70 and are revealed at 5 credits each: 125 credits.
  • Week 3. Three listing searches (dentists, physiotherapists, accountants) in your home city, capped at 1,500 credits.
  • Week 4. Signals on Reddit and LinkedIn using the phrases above, with the remaining credits as the ceiling.

You are billed only for lookups that return something usable, and every email address is verified; a bounce is refunded exactly. Month two drops to 3,900 credits. Sending from a connected Gmail or Outlook adds $10.80 a month per connection.

Writing to an advertiser versus a local owner

The two groups need different openings.

To an advertiser, keep it commercial and specific. "You are bidding on 'family solicitor Manchester'. Your firm already has a guide on that topic that could rank, which would let you cut that spend." Then one question.

To a local owner, keep it plain and about customers. "You have 12 reviews on Google; the two practices nearest you have over 200. When people compare, that is what they see." Then offer one fix you can show quickly.

Sluice drafts first messages from what it found, several at a time, and scores each with a reason before it can be queued. If a draft misses, the next is steered by why. More on this in buying signals that actually convert.

Where Sluice will not help an SEO agency

  • No ranking data, backlink data or keyword volumes. Keep your SEO tools.
  • No ad spend figures. You know that a business advertises, not how much it spends.
  • Visitor identification only works for companies that own their network. Most small businesses reading your blog will stay anonymous.
  • HubSpot is the only CRM integration. If you run on Salesforce, leads will need exporting.
  • Sluice is new and not proven at large volume, and there are no public customer reviews yet.

The plan to pick

If you sell to one niche, Working at $39 covers it, with Autopilot rerunning your keyword and town searches under a daily credit ceiling. If you run several niches or prospect on behalf of clients, Agency at $149 gives unlimited customer profiles, 20,000 credits in the first month and lookups at cost plus 40%. Compare the tiers on pricing, or read the agencies playbook if prospecting for clients is part of what you sell.

Questions people ask

Why are Google advertisers good leads for an SEO agency?
A company paying for ads has budget and already values search traffic. If it pays for keywords it could rank for, the conversation about organic search starts from money it is already spending.
Can Sluice show me a prospect's rankings or ad spend?
No. It tells you a business advertises on a keyword in a place, and for local listings it flags gaps like few reviews or a slipping rating. Rankings and spend estimates need your own SEO tools.
What should an SEO agency say in a first cold email?
One specific observation about their search presence, why it costs them, and a small offer such as a short audit of one page. Skip the generic 'I can get you to page one' line.
Does Sluice work for SEO agencies with several niches?
Yes. Each niche can be its own customer profile. The Agency plan allows unlimited profiles, which also suits running prospecting for several clients.

Try it on your own market

Sluice quotes the worst-case price before anything runs and charges only for lookups that found something, so finding out costs close to nothing.
