Sluice vs Octolens

Octolens is a social listening tool: it watches Reddit, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Hacker News, GitHub and review sites for your keywords and alerts you to mentions, from $159 a month billed annually (as of October 2026). It does not enrich contacts. Sluice turns the people behind those conversations into scored leads with a way to reach them.

What Octolens is good at

Octolens watches more of the places developers and technical buyers talk than Sluice does, including Hacker News and GitHub, alongside Reddit, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and review sites. It is built to catch mentions quickly so a team can reply in the thread while it is still alive, and 15,000 mentions a month across 10 keywords is generous for brand and competitor monitoring. For marketing, community and developer relations work, a stream of mentions is exactly the right output.

Use Octolens if: Pick Octolens if you want to know whenever your brand, product or competitors are mentioned, if Hacker News and GitHub are where your audience talks, or if the person acting on the alert is a marketer or community manager who replies in public rather than a seller who reaches out in private.

A mention is not a lead

Here is a mention Octolens might surface: a Reddit comment saying "we have outgrown our scheduling tool and the export is broken again." If you sell scheduling software, that is a gift. It is also a username, a subreddit, and nothing else.

To do anything beyond replying in public, you still need to answer four questions:

  1. Who is this person, and where do they work?
  2. Do they fit the customer you sell to, or are they a student, a hobbyist, or a competitor's employee?
  3. Is the problem live now, or was this a passing grumble?
  4. How do you reach them in private without being strange about it?

Listening tools stop at the mention by design. Our view is that this is the main split in the market: listening tools have the conversation but not the contact, and contact databases have the contact but not the conversation. Sluice tries to hold both.

What happens to that same comment in Sluice?

The comment arrives because one of your signals matched it, for example "outgrown our scheduling tool". Then:

  • Sluice works out who the commenter is where it can, and their employer.
  • It scores them 0 to 100 against your customer profile, decides whether they are worth approaching, and reads whether the words suggest the problem is current.
  • If they clear 70, they are revealed with a link back to the comment.
  • A first message is drafted from what they actually wrote, then scored with a reason before you can queue it.

Not every Reddit username resolves to a person. Plenty stay anonymous, and Sluice does not guess. That is a real limit of any tool working from public posts.

When the mention stream is the right product

Octolens is better for jobs where the output is a public reply or an internal alert:

  • Brand monitoring. Knowing every time your product is mentioned, good or bad.
  • Developer audiences. Hacker News and GitHub are covered; Sluice covers neither.
  • Community and support. Replying in the thread while it is still alive is often the whole job.
  • Volume. 15,000 mentions a month is designed for broad keyword watching. Sluice is designed to return fewer, ranked people.

When scored leads are the right product

Sluice fits when the person acting on the result is selling:

  • You need a name. A private message to a known person at a known company, not a public reply.
  • You need to filter. A listening feed on a broad keyword fills with noise. A score cuts it to the people who fit.
  • You sell beyond social. Sluice also reads competitors' reviewers on G2, Capterra and Trustpilot, Google advertisers, companies hiring, local business listings and your website's visitors.
  • You want to know which phrases work. Each signal records how many people it found and how many cleared 70. More on that in buying signals that actually convert.

What it costs to get from mention to conversation

Say a listening tool gives you 40 promising mentions a month. With Octolens Pro at $159 a month (annual), you have the mentions. To reach the 40 people privately you would still need a contact tool and someone's time to match usernames to people.

On Sluice's Working plan ($39 a month, 3,900 credits), the same 40 people found from your signals are scored in the same pass, and only those who clear 70 cost anything to reveal. Every pass shows its worst-case price before it runs.

These are different jobs, so the totals are not a like-for-like price comparison. They show where the extra steps and costs sit.

An honest caveat on platform access

Every tool reading public posts depends on platform access, and that can change. GummySearch shut down in November 2025 after failing to reach a Reddit API deal. This applies to Octolens and Sluice alike. See Reddit as a lead source for how we read it, and GummySearch alternatives if you were a user.

The decision

If you want to hear every mention, especially on Hacker News and GitHub, use Octolens. If you want the people behind the right mentions, scored and reachable, try Sluice on the $9 plan. Teams with both a community and a sales motion sometimes run one of each.

Questions people ask

How much does Octolens cost?
As of October 2026, Octolens Pro is $159 a month billed annually, with 15,000 mentions and 10 keywords.
Does Octolens find email addresses?
No. Octolens finds mentions and does not enrich contacts. To email or message the person behind a mention you need a separate step to work out who they are.
Does Sluice monitor Hacker News or GitHub?
No. Sluice's public-post sources are Reddit, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitch and Facebook, plus review sites. If Hacker News and GitHub matter most to you, Octolens covers them.
Is Sluice a brand monitoring tool?
No. Sluice is built to find buyers, not to track every mention of your brand. It searches for phrases that suggest someone has the problem you solve, and ranks the people it finds.
